I think this is a pretty minor problem but it would be nice to fix.

sudo cp /etc/fail2ban/fail2ban.conf /etc/fail2ban/fail2ban.local
sudo cp /etc/fail2ban/jail.conf /etc/fail2ban/jail.local

to edit config edit the jail.local file!!!

sudo nano /etc/fail2ban/jail.local

steps taken:

sudo apt install python-pyinotify
sudo nano /etc/fail2ban/jail.local

changed: backend = auto to: backend = pyinotify

then: sudo systemctl restart fail2ban
