Homemade Chinese Five-Spice

This version uses a combination of black pepper and coriander as a substitute for Sichuan peppercorns.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp Star anise, ground
  • 1 tbsp Fennel seeds, ground
  • 1 tbsp Cinnamon, ground
  • 1 tsp Cloves, ground
  • 2 tsp Black pepper, ground
  • 1 tsp Coriander, ground

Instructions

  1. Grind: Use a mortar and pestle to pulverize into a fine powder.
  2. Sieve: Pass the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve to remove woody fragments.
  3. Store: Keep in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.
